Most of the time, septic systems seem to take care of themselves. As such, many homeowners don't really think about septic maintenance.

Are there any warning signs that indicate you have septic tank problems? And what should you watch out for during the inspection?
The good news is, we're about to answer all of these questions and more. Read on to learn what you need to know.
WHAT IS A SEPTIC SYSTEM INSPECTION?
A septic system inspection is a checkup of your septic system performed by a professional. There are four different levels of septic inspections. The level determines how in-depth the examination is.
But all these inspections have the same purpose. That is, they evaluate whether your septic system is functioning properly and without any problems.
WHY IS A SEPTIC INSPECTION IMPORTANT?
The main reason why regular inspections are important is that the septic tank requires periodic cleaning. Otherwise, the system may clog and start backing up into your home.
To understand this better, you need to know how a septic system works. First, everything you put down your household drains ends up in your septic tank. Once there, the waste separates into three layers.
Certain materials, like fat and oils, float to the top to form a layer called scum. Heavier waste sinks to the bottom, forming the sludge layer.
The layer of wastewater in the middle exits the tank into the drain field. There, it sinks deep into the ground and is processed by nature.
But, if the sludge and/or scum become too voluminous, the system can't function properly. To prevent this, have your tank inspected regularly. The inspection can reveal any such problems before they spill over into your home.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A SEPTIC INSPECTION?
As a general guideline, septic inspections should be done at least every two years.
Additionally, you should have it done before moving into a new home.
WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS THAT YOU NEED A SEPTIC INSPECTION?
You should consider getting your septic system inspected if you notice any of these problems:
Sewage odour in or around your house
Slow drains
Septic waste backing up from the drains
Flooding in your yard or drain field
Never ignore these issues. Doing so will lead to disastrous consequences.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING A SEPTIC INSPECTION
A Level 0 inspection is simply a visual inspection of your septic system. It may involve a few non-invasive tests, like examining soil samples.
The higher-level inspections are more comprehensive. They, for instance, evaluate the thickness of the scum and sludge layers. Level 2 and Level 3 inspections determine any cracks or leaks in your system.
Be sure to take notes of what happens during the inspection for your records. Get a summary report from the contractor performing the inspection if you can. This way, you'll know when to get your next inspection.
